In my childhood, I remember my mother saying, "I love sumo-wrestlers because they smell nice." What made them smell so nice is the "Bintsuke-oil"(hair oil for sumo-wrestlers) they used to set their hair. On a suuny day, I was walking behind a sumo-wrestler and the scent of the oil came up my nasal reminding me of this converstaion I had with my mother. I also discovered that sumo-wrestlers rides around on bicycles a lot.

The purpose of shrines and temples are like driving a wedge into the local land to create a connection with the past and it makes us feel that time is running slowly in that area. Zoujouji is the big wedge of that land. And Tokyo tower is a wedge that was driven in the Showa-era. Looking both of the wedges, I felt the time that run thorough these eras and relished the time that is flowing now.

One of the reasons that Ukiyo-e has high values in the present days is that, the normal landscape of Japan that is far away from the Western world, painted with the touch of fantasy got across and it influesnced many Western artist that are still famous till this day. The original artwork of Hiroshige Utagawa was trace painted by Vincent van Gogh in his oil painting work. Knowing that many successful painters have traced the Ukiyo-e artwork gave me the pressure but I searched for the Ume-tree(plum tree) that was originally painted in the artwork. When I got to the point where the Ume-tree had been planted, there was only the concrete road. Reminiscing the past, I watched the sun go down.

Kaino Takahiko

Which part should I cut out to make it look like a picture of Tokyo? In order to clear this theme, I spent a considerable amount of time researching books about Tokyo. In conclusion all I found out was that it was an impossible task. However the creator of "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo", Hiroshige Utagawa"s saying, "To see from another 's point of view is not a bad thing" drew my attention. With the insight's of Hiroshige's works, I covered all 119 places that was painted in "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" with my bicycle. Two and a half years after making the concept, I painted modern Tokyo.
